GRP degrades with age. UV exposure wears away the protective surface, the fibres begin to show, and the sheet turns brittle and dark. A rooflight that once flooded a unit with light gradually becomes a grey patch that barely passes daylight, while growing more fragile every year.

Physical damage speeds this up. Hail, foot traffic, falling branches and thermal movement all crack aged sheets. Water then tracks through the fixings and cracks, which is when you see drips, stained stock and damp purlins. Signs a Rooflight Needs Replacing

Failures are usually visible from ground level once you know what to look for. Check your roof from inside the building first, then from outside with binoculars or during a professional survey.

  • Visible fibre bloom, where the surface has worn through and glass fibres show as a furry texture.
  • Yellowing, browning or a chalky, opaque appearance instead of clear translucency.
  • Cracks, star fractures from impacts, or split corners around fixings.
